In 1906, the John S. Gray Library branch was built in Detroit at Field and Agnes Streets as the city's first city-owned library branch, designed by Malcomson & Higginbotham. The branch was funded by Andrew Carnegie. Meanwhile, the main library remained in the 1872 Centre Park building.
